What Is Occupational Therapy?
Helping kids do the things that matter most.
Occupational therapy helps children build the necessary skills and strategies to do the things they want — and need — to do every day. That might be writing their name, making friends at recess, getting dressed independently, or simply feeling comfortable in their own skin.
At Ethos Pediatric Therapy, we work alongside kids and their families to identify what’s getting in the way and develop strategies that fit naturally into their real lives — not just the therapy room.
Every child is different.
So is our approach.
Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor skills are the small, precise movements we use with our hands and fingers. For school-age children, these skills underpin nearly everything done in a classroom — and when they’re underdeveloped, it can affect a child’s confidence just as much as their performance.
Gross Motor & Coordination
Gross motor skills involve the larger muscles of the body — the ones used for running, jumping, climbing, and maintaining balance. When these skills are delayed or inconsistent, children may appear clumsy, tire easily during physical activity, or avoid the playground altogether.
Sensory Processing
Every child processes sensory information differently. Some kids are overly sensitive to touch, sound, or movement; others seem to seek out intense sensory input. When a child’s sensory processing system is out of balance, it can affect their ability to learn, concentrate, regulate their emotions, and feel comfortable in their own body.
Daily Living Skills
Occupational therapy was built on the premise that being able to do the ordinary things in life — getting dressed, eating a meal, brushing your teeth — is fundamental to dignity and independence. For children, developing these skills builds self-esteem and eases the daily demands on families.
Cognitive & Executive Function
Executive function is the brain’s management system — the set of skills that helps us plan, focus, remember instructions, manage emotions, and get things done. For many children, especially those with ADHD, learning differences, or anxiety, executive function is the invisible hurdle standing between their potential and their performance.
Social & Play Skills
Play is the most crucial/essential childhood occupation — and for some children, the social demands of play feel overwhelming, confusing, or simply hard to navigate. Occupational therapy approaches social and play skill development through the lens of participation: what does this child need in order to engage meaningfully with peers?
